What is MOTS-C?

A 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide — its signal originates in mitochondrial DNA, not nuclear DNA. Best understood not as a stimulant but as a communication molecule: part of how cells signal about energy demand, stress, and recovery.

Mechanisms & Pathways:

Studied in connection with AMPK, a master metabolic regulator, and the cell’s decision-making about fuel use under energetic strain. MOTS-c supports metabolic flexibility (the ability to switch fuel sources) rather than forcing a single fat-burning switch.
